Peter Crouch takes aim at Cristiano Ronaldo with "not cool" remarks

Peter Crouch has taken aim at Cristiano Ronaldo and told the Manchester United star that it is no longer enough to be a striker.

It comes after a listless display from the Red Devils against Liverpool, where they were outclassed in every department.

United were all over the place as their rivals took charge from the very first whistle and could have won by more than their five-goal margin.

Mohamed Salah scored a hattrick while Naby Keita and Diogo Jota also got in on the act to mark a pivotal day for both clubs.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a number of attacking options to choose from after signing Ronaldo in the summer from Juventus.

But the five-time Ballon d'Or winner had a torrid time against Liverpool and many have noted the lack of pressing he commits to.

With so many others not doing their basic jobs, United were ransacked off the ball and could barely lay a finger on their opponents.

And Crouch reckons Ronaldo has got to do more, stating that he cannot simply rely on being a goalscoring striker.

He told the Daily Mail : “Standing up front just isn’t in vogue any more and this is an ongoing issue being debated around Manchester United this season after Cristiano Ronaldo ’s arrival.

“Things do change, new eras are quickly upon us, although there is definitely a part of me that is a little sad about it. I’m nostalgic and old now, remember.

“The people I looked up to while growing up were obviously the old-fashioned, quintessential No 9s: Dion Dublin, Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, the Brazilian Ronaldo. Supreme footballers.

FERNANDES: Bruno's "worst" problem with Ronaldo comes to light at Man Utd

“I think back to those combinations of Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips, Andy Cole and Peter Beardsley, the big man-little man partnership.

“The sort that Jermain Defoe and I had. It has died out, the two strikers up there feeding off each other. I can’t think of too many around.

“There is so much more demand on the goalscorers in the modern game. Usually in that position now you have quick, potent wingers either side of you.

SOLSKJAER: Klopp and Mourinho reacted in same way to Man Utd humiliation

“The frontman didn’t used to get involved in too much pressing, but at Liverpool when you see Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane — plus Diogo Jota when he starts — the roles have altered hugely."

United have the chance to redeem themselves this weekend when they face Tottenham in the Premier League, who are also facing pressure.

Whether Solskjaer will be in charge for that match remains to be seen with reports indicating that Antonio Conte has already been sounded out.
