Peter Crouch selects all-time XI of former teammates as England legends are snubbed

Peter Crouch has revealed an impressive fantasy line-up of ex-teammates following his decision to retire from football .

The former Liverpool and Tottenham forward, who most recently played for Stoke, announced the news on social media on Friday morning, and tweeted from his personal account saying: "After a lot of deliberation this summer I have decided to retire from football! Our wonderful game has given me everything. I'm so thankful to everyone who helped me get there and to help me stay there for so long. X"

The news was received with sadness from the world of football, with plenty of players praising the striker and lauding his ability during his peak years.

As part of his announcement he wrote for the Daily Mail and released a dream team of the best players he had played with.

Ex-Liverpool players were the most prominent to feature in the line-up, with goalkeeper Pepe Reina, right back Glen Johnson, centre midfielders Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso and forward Fernando Torres making the cut.

The team also featured three players from Crouch's time at Spurs, with centre-back Ledley King, centre midfielder Luka Modric and forward Gareth Bale included.

The rest of the team was made up of players he took to the pitch with for England, with John Terry and Ashley Cole at the back and Wayne Rooney up front.

It meant there was no place available for high-profile names like Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard or David Beckham.

Carragher didn't seem to mind, however, and was one of those who paid tribute to Crouch, tweeting: "Congratulations Peter Crouch on a brilliant career! Highlights for me were the perfect hattrick v Arsenal , the overhead kick in the Champions League v Galatasaray and singing Hey Jude on the karaoke in my local 'The Solly' on Marsh Lane!"
