Peter Crouch recalls hilarious Liverpool tale involving Robbie Fowler and Rafa Benitez

You can picture it now.

Peter Crouch and Robbie Fowler coming back from a night out, a 10pm curfew, and a patrolling Rafa Benitez - perfect ingredients for an amusing football anecdote.

It would take something special to trump the famed 'golf club' incident involving Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise.

But Crouchy reckons his memory of Fowler from a similar time at the Merseyside club does just that.

Liverpool were on an away trip when the strike duo opted to head out and experience the local bars.

Disciplinarian Benitez had set strict orders for any players venturing out that they must be back in their rooms by 10pm - which of course, Crouchy and Fowler did not stick to.

Luckily for them they managed to sneak back in just in time before their boss came to check on them - but with hilarious consequences.

Crouch told the Mail : "Suddenly there was a knock on the door. It was Rafa. 'Crouch, you are here,' he said. 'Where is Fowler?'

Benitez was less than impressed (REUTERS)

"I looked over my shoulder, expecting Robbie to be in bed, but he was nowhere to be seen. As I was trying to come up with an answer, I caught a glimpse of Robbie out the corner of my eye.

"Somehow, he'd hoisted himself on to the top of a wardrobe and was crammed into the tiniest space. Rafa, oblivious to it all, became more and more exasperated as I mumbled 'I don't know', while biting my lip so I didn't burst out laughing."

Crouch just about managed to contain his amusement without letting slip to Benitez where his teammate was hiding.

The Spanish coach then disappeared down the corridor muttering about Fowler facing potential action in the morning.

No sooner had Benitez gone, Fowler hopped out of the cupboard with a big grin spread across his face.

Classic Robbie.
