Peter Crouch names his best ever Premier League XI of foreign players

Premier League legend Peter Crouch has named a starting 11 of the best foreign players to have plied their trade in the division, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City stars leading the way.

Crouch - who played for seven teams in the Premier League - recently retired after a brief spell at Burnley, and has been reminiscing over his career in the top-flight.

In a Q&A with the Daily Mail, one reader asked the 39-year-old for his dream foreign XI, and Crouch replied: "Goodness, Brian! I could be here for the rest of the week and still be worrying about my selections.

"I'm going to play a Christmas tree formation - 4-3-2-1 - and I think this team would see lots of the ball.

"(Denis) Irwin slots in at right-back as he was versatile. He played mostly on the left for Manchester United but you only had to see his ability with a dead ball. Midfield was almost impossible to choose and I feel bad for leaving out Sergio Aguero but I had to have (Dennis) Bergkamp and (Gianfranco) Zola. That wasn't an option."

As well as the players already mentioned, Crouch went for Peter Schmeichel in goal, with the Danish goalkeeper a big part of United's famous treble-winning side of 1998-1999.

He opted for another former United player in Patrice Evra at left-back, with two recent giants of the division in Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and Vincent Kompany of City at centre-back.

In midfield there are two more City players, in David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne, along with Arsenal great Patrick Vieira.

And along with Bergkamp and Zola in the forward roles Crouch went for Thierry Henry, the division's sixth all time top scorer.

Crouch's team in full (4-3-2-1): Schmeichel; Evra, Van Dijk, Kompany, Irwin; Silva, Vieira, De Bruyne; Bergkamp, Zola; Henry
