Peter Crouch admits he's 'rubbish' at buying wife Abbey presents and gets kids to pick

Peter Crouch has admitted he's 'rubbish' at buying wife Abbey Clancy presents and gets their kids to pick gifts.

The former England footballer, 40, has been married to the 35-year-old model and TV presenter for 10 years, but he confessed he’s not a big fan of the festive season, after years of having to play football over Christmas.

Peter, who retired in 2019, said he now relies on their four children - Sophia, 10, Liberty, six, Johnny, three, and Jack, two - to help with buying gifts because he confessed he’s ‘useless’.

Despite Abbey doing ‘everything’ in regards to present buying for him and the kids, Peter said he quite often ‘gets it wrong’ when deciding what to give his wife on Christmas Day, and she tells him ‘straight away’ if he’s bought her something she doesn’t like.

“I think one year she said to me, ‘You don’t even know who I am!’” he joked to OK magazine.

His thoughtful gift of a maroon baby bag, given to her on their first Christmas after welcoming daughter Sofia, went down like a lead balloon with Abbey, as she dubbed it ‘ridiculous’.

“That was my favourite year!” he laughed, noting that it had got ‘little pockets for bottles and dummies and stuff’.

And he messed up a few years ago when he bought Abbey a designer jacket, without realising he had actually purchased it for her the year before.

“I forgot I’d bought it for her the year before and I got her the same one but it was the slightly newer version. She didn’t wear it last year that’s why I forgot!” Peter quipped.

The footballer has been playing matches on Boxing Day since he was 18, and said it’s been a difficult transition trying to switch off and enjoy Christmas Day since his retirement.

“It was good but I’ll be honest, after one year I would actually rather play football! There’s something special about not being hungover when everyone else is, and about training on Christmas Day,” he explained.

Peter said the build-up to Boxing Day matches was ‘all I’ve ever been used to’, and ultimately preferred his family coming to watch him play football over Christmas, rather than spending time with them off the pitch.

The father-of-four said it was ‘chaos’ in their house over the festive season, and they usually indulge in buying matching Christmas pyjamas.

“There’s usually a picture of all of us flying around on Instagram,” he joked.
