Peter Cherrie targeting No 1 spot after dramatic Dundalk return

Peter Cherrie made a dramatic return to Dundalk today and immediately set his sights on winning the gloves.

The goalkeeper was a free agent after leaving Derry City and is back at Oriel Park after a seven-year absence.

Cherrie spent five years with the Lilywhites between 2009 and 2014, making over 200 appearances and winning a league.

The 37-year-old then played for Cliftonville, Bray Wanderers, Cork City and Derry City before this latest transfer.

The Scot said: “It’s absolutely brilliant to be back. If you had said this to me a month ago I’d have said there was no chance it would ever happen.

“There’s loads of familiar faces still around.

“Stephen McDonnell is doing the youth side (academy), Liam Burns is doing his community side and there’s lads like Andy Boyle, Pat Hoban and Chris Shields who I played with in 2014 so it’s great to be back with them.”

Albanian keeper Alessio Abibi was signed over the winter as Dundalk’s new No 1 following stalwart Gary Rogers’ retirement.

Cherrie will provide competition and Dundalk boss Filippo Giovagnoli is still looking to sign a third goalkeeper.

But ahead of the season starting next month, Cherrie has vowed to fight for the gloves and said: “It’s never been in my nature to come and sit on the bench.

“It’s just not in me. If that day comes, then I may as well retire. I’m here to push every single day and work every single day and I’ve told the coaching staff that.

“I might only have a couple of years left so I’ll be treating every day like it’s my last.”
