Peter Cherrie credits Declan Devine's 'wow' factor for bringing fight back to Derry City

Peter Cherrie has credited Declan Devine’s ‘wow’ factor for putting the fight back in Derry City this season.

The Candystripes host Cork City at the Ryan McBride Brandywell tomorrow, looking for a win that would push them closer to a European finish.

Derry came up short in the recent EA Sports Cup final against Dundalk having brought the league champions to penalties.

But goalkeeper Cherrie feels a European finish would be just rewards for a club that is back on track under Devine.

“The passion that man has is unbelievable. It's not just on Friday, it's every day in training,” said the Scot.

“His passion for the players, the club, the city, its people is incredible. You just want to play and train for him because he has you that fired up.

“You want to leave everything on the pitch for him. He’s good with players one-on-one, but his team talks are his big thing.

“There’s no ranting or raving, shouting or bawling, he's calm and you listen to what he's saying.

“Guys have come up to me in the dressing room and said 'wow'. The hair is standing up on the back of your neck because of how passionate he is.”

Cherrie hopes to land a new contract after a steady teason that was briefly interrupted when be broke both hands in the space of two weeks.

Cherrie added: “I broke my right hand against Bohs when I punched my team-mate Ally Gilchrist in the back of the head!

“And I broke the other one against Dundalk, when I punched Pat Hoban in the head.

“I was actually going out for a ball with my right hand and remembered that one was already broken so I had to change it quite quick.”
