Peter Aliss dead at 89 as tributes pour in for legendary BBC golf commentator

Legendary golf commentator Peter Aliss has passed away at the age of 89.

The Berlin-born former player has been the voice of the BBC 's coverage of the sport for over 50 years, as well as being involved in golf course architecture.

His passing was announced on Sunday morning, with his last tournament the Masters in November.

A statement said: "It is with great sadness we announce the passing of golfing and broadcast legend Peter Alliss.

"Peter’s death was unexpected but peaceful.

"Peter was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and his family ask for privacy at this difficult time."

As a player Aliss won 31 tournaments and he and his father Percy were the first father-son duo to compete in the Ryder Cup, when it was a contest between Great Britain and the United States.

His first commentary assignment came at the 1961 Open, a tournament he also played in.

He was inducted into the golf Hall of Fame in 2012.

BBC director of sport Barbara  Slater said: "Peter was the voice of golf.

"He was an absolute master of his craft with a unique ability to capture a moment with a magical turn of phrase that no one else could match."
