Pete Taylor reacts to his daughter's win over Delfine Persoon

Pete Taylor has described his daughter as 'the greatest female boxer of all time' after her win over Delfine Persoon.

The Bray fighter's bout with the Belgian went the distance once again, but the judges scored the fight 98-93, 96-94, 96-94 in her favour.

Pete reacted to the fight by posting on Instagram: "The undisputed, greatest female boxer of all time."

Pete coached his daughter to Olympic gold glory at the 2012 Games in London and was her long-time coach until 2015.

The pair split after the breakdown of her parents' marriage, but were pictured together in late 2019.

Speaking previously about the split from her father, Katie said: "The first time I had to go training without him, I was driving in by myself and the tears were rolling down my face.

"I just felt like every time I was stepping into the ring without my dad at that time, I was missing an arm."

Pete has stated he respected his daughter for her decision.

He said in 2019: "She knew what the outcome would be. She knew that she’d be missing me in the corner but she still had the morals to go ahead and do that. You’ve got to respect that. She was reared good.

"There’s not many people who’d risk losing a European, World and Olympic title by not having your father as a coach.

"She backed her ma... although it’s hurtful for me - but I’ve still got to take my hat off to her."

Katie started well in the fight on Saturday night and pushed Persoon back with a couple of strong left hooks.

Persoon was heavily marked under the right eye in the second round as Taylor continued to dominate.

But the Belgian's high work-rate began to trouble Taylor and the Irish champion also sustained a nasty swelling on her forehead.

Persoon refused to take a backward step and she landed a high volume of shots, with her right hand proving highly effective.

Taylor responded with a burst of punches on the bell as Persoon tumbled to the floor almost in exhaustion.

"I knew it was going to be tough and I had to dig deep at some stage in the fight," Taylor told Sky Sports.

"But I thought I boxed better than the last time, even though I got drawn in a few times, and that's what got me the win in the end.

"You can't relax against Delfine, you know she's going to come and come and we've had two amazing fights.

"I thought it was a lot more convincing tonight."
