Pete Hegseth is set to become the new Secretary of Defense after a narrow confirmation vote in the Senate. Vice President JD Vance announced that Hegseth will be sworn in on Saturday morning.
The Senate vote ended in a 51-50 tie, with Vice President Vance casting the tie-breaking vote in favor of Hegseth. This marks only the second time in history that a vice president has broken a tie for a Cabinet nominee, the first being Mike Pence in 2017 for Betsy DeVos.

The confirmation process was not without controversy, as former GOP Leader Mitch McConnell and GOP Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins joined Democrats in opposing Hegseth's nomination. Despite the opposition, Hegseth's confirmation signals a new chapter for the Department of Defense.
