“Saturday Night Live” and “King of Staten Island” star Pete Davidson will star and produce a Joey Ramone biopic for Netflix, the streaming service announced Thursday.
The film, “I Slept With Joey Ramone,” is based on a memoir of the same name by Mickey Leigh and will cover the life of the punk rocker from Queens, New York.
Born Jeffrey Hyman, Joey Ramone adopted the stage name when he founded The Ramones in 1974 along with Dee Dee Ramone (Doug Colvin) and Johnny Ramone (John Cummings). Manager Thomas Erdelyi soon took over drumming duties as Tommy Ramone. Before disbanding in 1996, the Ramones became one of the most influential rock bands of all time.
Joey Ramone died at the age of 49 in 2001.
The Netflix film will be directed by Jason Orley, who worked on a story treatment with Davidson. Orley previously directed Davidson in Hulu’s “Big Time Adolescence” and the comedian’s stand-up special “Alive from New York,” also for Netflix.
No other casting or release date information is available.
Davidson, 27, has previously appeared other Netflix movies, including “Set It Up” and “The Dirt,” a biopic about glam metal band Motley Crue. He’ll be seen on screen next in “The Suicide Squad” which is set for an Aug. 6 release in theaters and on HBO Max.
