The Seattle Seahawks signed former Broncos quarterback Paxton Lynch last month to compete for the job as Russell Wilson’s backup in 2019.
Lynch has some experience as an NFL starter – just like former backup Brett Hundley, who is now a free agent – but he didn’t exactly find success in that role.
Still, coach Pete Carroll likes a lot of what he has seen out of Lynch, saying he was a first round pick “for obvious reasons”.
“At this point it’s really still about potential to play,” Carroll continued. “But he’s got some great aspects in his background and he’s got some NFL experience. It wasn’t all great, but it was still experience and that will help him with good coaches and all that.”
Lynch played in five NFL games after getting drafted 26th overall in 2016. He completed 79 passes in 128 attempts, throwing for 792 yards and four touchdowns, along with four interceptions.
Still, Carroll likes his size and his throwing ability, and with Hundley and Alex McGough gone, and former backup Austin Davis transitioning into a coaching role, the team needed someone to come in and backup Wilson.
Seattle almost certainly is going to bring in at least one, maybe two more quarterbacks to challenge Lynch for that role. For now though, it is his job to lose.
“We’re just excited to add him to the competition and see what he brings,” Carroll added.
