Pete Carroll: DK Metcalf is worthy of the hype

It’s been a long time since the Seattle Seahawks had a rookie quite as hyped as receiver DK Metcalf.

After the team traded up to snag him with the final pick in the second round, fans have been fawning over his impressive blend of size and speed, although concerns about his route-running and his average performance in college have made him a polarizing figure around the league.

Still, those concerns have not stopped the fans from supporting the former Ole Miss star. His jersey sales are rapidly climbing, despite the fact that he has yet to play an NFL game.

“He’s worthy of it,” coach Pete Carroll commented after the first day of training camp on Thursday. “He’s an extraordinary athlete and what a tremendous addition to our club. He’s had the opportunity to make really good impressions in the offseason with us and I know working with Russ [Wilson] and the fellas through the summertime, he was just on point. We are really excited about him and how he has the chance to contribute.”

Metcalf looked electric during rookie minicamp and OTA’s, although league rules stipulate that defensive players are limited in their ability to hit and touch offensive players.

The real test will come on Sunday when those rules are lifted, and fans will finally get to see Metcalf against full-speed competition.
