Pet wellbeing charity warns corn on the cob could be 'life-threatening' to dogs this BBQ season

As we head into summer, when barbecues become a weeknight treat, a pet wellbeing charity has warned owners that corn on the cob is "VERY dangerous to dogs".

PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) - a leading UK charity that provides free veterinary services to sick and injured animals - asked "please help us warn other dog lovers this BBQ season".

As many pet owners know, dogs are scavengers and will try to get their paws on whatever food is on offer but corn on the cob - a popular summer addition to many barbecues - can be potentially "life-threatening" for dogs.

'Watch out for this van' warns owner after claims 'scumbags' tried to steal his dog out of vehicle in Sighthill

In a statement, PDSA wrote: "Corn on the cob is VERY dangerous to dogs."

Adding: "We commonly remove them from pets, and although husks seem harmless, they can rip through intestines or cause a life-threatening blockage."

If your dog does eat corn on the cob owners are advised to watch for vomiting, straining during defecation, loss of appetite and stomach pain.

If your pet displays any of these symptoms, it is advised that you take them to see a vet immediately.

Recently owners were also warned of the dangers of the Benebone chew toy after it was recalled amid safety concerns.
