Pet shelter worker shares four dog breeds they would never choose to own

Picking a dog breed can be a tricky decision as you'll ideally be looking for something that compliments your lifestyle.

And with more than 222 breeds currently recognised by the UK Kennel Club, the decision is harder than ever. There are so many factors to consider, such as a dog's exercise requirements, what their diets have to consist of and potential health complications the four legged friend may suffer down the road.

Rachel, who owns natural dog treat business The Dogfather and who previously worked for two years in a shelter, named some of the breeds she would steer clear of, writes the Mirror.

During a TikTok clip with more than 15,000 views as well as hundreds of likes, the expert named the four breeds that she wouldn't choose to own as well as explaining her reasoning behind it.

The expert revealed: "I would never own a Belgian Malinois. Don't get me wrong, they are incredible dogs and what you see of them when they have been raised correctly is amazing. But they require so much physical and mental stimulation."

Rachel explained that if you want the sort of dog that will lie next to you on the sofa while you're watching TV, a Malinois is not the pooch for you.

The expert then mentioned the French Bulldog, also known as the Frenchie - a breed that is notoriously plagued with serious health problems.

She explained her reasoning: "I would never own one of them purely because of the amount of health issues that come up with Frenchies, especially with the way they've been bred over the past few years. A lot of them unfortunately pass away at a young age mainly due to breeding."

Next on the list is a Dogue de Bordeaux, because of its "very low life span". Despite "absolutely loving" the breed, Rachel said: "I just could not begin to imagine losing a dog, like time goes by so fast and I just could not do that"

Finally, the last dog breed she would never own is a Shar Pei. She added: "With rolls of skin, they are prone to skin issues.

"Personally, this is just personal preference working in the cat and dog shelter, and over the experiences I've had with Shar Peis, I haven't met one that wasn't aggressive.

"Now I know that not every Shar Pei will be, but that's from what I've seen. I wouldn't personally wanna have one."
