Pet rabbits with 'health issues' found near busy West Lothian road after being cruelly abandoned

Two pet rabbits with "health issues" were cruelly abandoned near a busy West Lothian road – with teams from the Scottish SPCA trying to track down those responsible.

The male rabbits were discovered near two empty cardboard boxes in a car park just off the A70, before the West Calder junction, at around 2.30pm on Sunday (19 January).

Scottish SPCA inspector Stuart Murray says that they were in "poor body condition" and were "borderline emaciated". One was also found to have hair loss.

Mr Murray added: "Despite their health issues, they are tame so we suspect they have been used to human contact.

"It's unclear whether they were released from the boxes or they managed to get free.

"We are grateful to the caller who stayed with the rabbits to make sure they were safe until we arrived.

"They were found at the car park at Camilty, past Harperigg Reservoir, near the junction for B7008."

Mr Murray said they they are now receiving the care they need at a Scottish SPCA rescue and rehoming centre.

Abandoning an animal is an offence, and anyone who recognises the rabbits, or knows who abandoned them, should contact the Scottish SPCA confidential hotline on 03000 999 999.
