Pet owners warned as five dog breeds most likely to be scared of thunderstorms revealed

Liverpool is set to be battered by thunderstorms over this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather alert and warns heavy downpours could cause flooding and travel disruption.

As heavy downpours are set to disrupt any plans we might have over the coming days, the loud thundery conditions could also affect our four legged friends.

According to Country Living, a scientific study researched how noises can cause dogs to feel distressed and discovered that 9,613 dogs out of the 13,700 examined suffered from a fear of thunder.

The findings showed that dogs who grow up around other dogs are less likely to be fearful of noises - and that older dogs were also less anxious in loud environments. Large dogs were also found to be less distressed by thunder - but there was no significant difference between small and medium dogs.

Neutered animals were more likely to get distressed and certain dog breeds such as Cairn Terriers and Rough Collies were found to be more likely to be scared of loud environments.
