Pet owners warned as dog breeds most likely to cause allergic reactions revealed

The dog breeds most likely to cause an allergic reaction have been revealed.

Deciding to get a new dog is a huge decision as there are many factors to consider so you make the choice that is best for you and your new four-legged friend.

According to Pets4Homes, it is estimated that between five and fifteen percent of the population suffer to some extent with an allergy to dogs.

Pet lovers who suffer with allergies are advised to choose a 'hypoallergenic' dog - which are breeds less likely to cause a flare up of your symptoms.

Our immune system reacts to the dander produced by dogs, which is widely spread by dogs shedding fur - and this means that hypoallergenic dogs tend to be the dogs that shed less.

No dog is truly hypoallergenic, but certain breeds can be more more likely to induce an allergic reaction - and Cleveland Clinic has identified 10 of the dogs most likely to cause allergies.

10 dog breeds likely to cause allergies

- Basset Hound
- Boston Terrier
- Bulldog
- Doberman Pinscher
- German Shepherd
- Labrador Retriever
- Pekingese
- Pug
- Saint Bernard
- Siberian Husky

Everyday Health shared some tips of how best to prevent pet allergies, which include ensuring your dog is kept clean and bathe it weekly in warm water. This may reduce the amount of dog dander and dog saliva deposited throughout your home.

They also advise to get a groomer to bathe your dog so you're not exposed to the allergens, wash the dog’s bedding weekly to remove excess dander - and to keep the dog out of the bedroom and off the bed during sleep.
