Pet nutrition business recalls canned dog food products over health risks

A pet nutrition company has recalled certain canned dog foods after it was discovered the products could cause serious health risks.

The company, Hill's Pet Nutrition, has recalled some of their canned dog food due to high levels of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D in dog food that goes over the recommended amount could cause illness in pets.

According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) ingestion of elevated levels of vitamin D could cause health issues depending on the period of time the consumption has taken place.

Dogs may show symptoms of vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss.

High levels of Vitamin D consumption could also lead to renal dysfunction in dogs.

The products recalled are:

  • Hill's Prescription Diet Canine k/d 370G
  •
  • Hill's Prescription Diet Canine r/d 360g
  •
  • Hill's Prescription Diet Canine i/d 360g
  •
  • Hill's Science Plan Canine Mature Adult Chicken 370g
  •
  • Hill's Prescription Diet Canine Recovery Pack 260g

The FSA says anyone who has bought any of these products should stop feeding their dog the products and return them to where they were purchased for a refund.

They also said: "If you have concerns that your pet may be showing symptoms of illness after eating one of the affected products, please contact a veterinarian or the Hill’s Pet Nutrition consumer careline."
