Pet food pulled off shelves in product recall over salmonella fears

The latest products to be recalled by supermarkets need to be taken off the shelves due to a risk of salmonella.

If there is a problem with a food product which means it should not be sold, then it may be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

The Food Standards Agency issues 'Product Withdrawal Information Notices' and 'Product Recall Information Notices' to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

This week, the latest product recalls include a common household item which could contain the presence of salmonella.

Benyfit Natural Pet Food Ltd

Benyfit Natural Pet Food Ltd has taken the precautionary step of recalling several types of frozen raw dog food products containing beef because the products might contain salmonella.

These products have been sold by various independent pet food stores and online.

The following products are being recalled:

  • Benyfit Natural 80-10-10 Beef Meat Feast
  • Unique Raw Duck, Beef & Ox Recipe
  • Benyfit Natural Beef & Tripe
  • Benyfit Natural Succulent Beef
  • Embark on Raw Natural Working Dog Food Beef Complete
  • Neew Dog Premium Beef
  • Unique Raw Chicken, Beef & Ox Recipe

The products listed above may be contaminated with salmonella which is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals.

The products could carry a potential risk because of the presence of salmonella, either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.

In humans, symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

Infected animals may not necessarily display signs of illness but symptoms can include diarrhoea.

Customers who bought the affected products online have been contacted and point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products.
