Pest control callouts to tackle ant infestations surged by almost 75% in the first two months of this year, according to leading firm Rentokil.
Milder temperatures between January and February are being blamed for the problem spiralling out of control.
Richard Faulkner, expert with Rentokil, explained that the warmer climate allows insects to thrive and multiply, leading to a significantly higher number of cases recorded this year than for the same period last year.
What was a seasonal issue has now become a challenge for households and businesses all year round.
He said: “Rentokil typically receives the majority of its callouts for ants during summertime.

“However, progressively milder winters are resulting in increased callout levels earlier in the year.
“A small ant problem can quickly become a much larger one.
“If they find a food source, the insects lay down a pheromone trail which attracts other ants to the area.”
The capital was the worst affected, with a 43% spike in callouts for ants.
Kildare, 19%, Kerry, 10%, and Carlow, 5%, were the next counties most affected.
Leaving food out encourages ants.
The advice to avoid an infestation is to clear up food and liquid spillages immediately and wipe up any food crumbs from under appliances and units.
Also in the kitchen, make sure that food is stored in airtight containers.
Uneaten pet food should never be left out either.
Blocking off entry points for ants by sealing all cracks and crevices around doors and window frames is also important.
Outside of the house, waste management is key.
In the garden, compost should always be enclosed and rubbish bin lids need to be closed tightly.
