Pervert jailed for giving sweets to children in Rising Sun Country Park

A pervert is back behind bars after he gave sweets to to children in a popular North Tyneside park.

George Willis was banned from having contact with anyone under the age of 18 when he was made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) in 2017, which he was when he was locked-up for having sexual activity with a child.

But, in February this year, the 55-year-old breached the order when he gave sweets to two children under the age of 10 in the Rising Sun Country Park, in Wallsend.

A court heard that the two youngsters were known to Willis as they were the kids of one of his acquaintances.

Willis appeared before magistrates in North Tyneside via video link to HMP Northumberland, as he had been recalled to prison on his previous sentence, where he pleaded guilty to one count of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Kirstie Devine, prosecuting, said Willis was in the Rising Sun Country Park with his acquaintance and her children on February 8 this year.

"The defendant isn't allowed contact with children under 18," she continued. "The children approach the defendant and he gives them a sweet, saying "here you go".

"He didn't instigate the contact, that was the children, but the defendant knew they were going to be there."

The court heard that Willis was made subject of the SHPO in May 2017 when he was jailed for 32 months at Newcastle Crown Court for three counts of sexual activity with a child and one of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, which involved a 15-year-old girl.

He was later locked-up for a further 23 months after it emerged he'd had sex with the teenager just days before he was due to be sentenced for the original offences.

Mark Styles, defending, said Willis, who is formerly from Wallsend but gave his address as HMP Northumberland, only had "minimal" contact with the kids in the Rising Sun Country Park.

He added: "There's a moment where the children approach him and he's handed them a sweet. It's a very public place and there's no suggestion of any sexual contact."

Willis was jailed for 18 weeks and ordered to pay a £128 victim surcharge.
