The group was made up of tourists from Chile, Brazil, France and Argentina.

An Argentine man will stay in the country where he faces charges of "destroying Peru's cultural heritage".

Police said he had acknowledge a role in the allegations.

Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is visited by more than one million tourists a year.
