Peru earthquake latest: powerful 7.1 magnitude quake hits south

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck southern Peru.

The US Geological Survey has reported that an earthquake struck around 3.50am local time on Friday.

The quake's epicentre was 86 miles northeast of Arequipa and it had a depth of around 160 miles.

The national emergency office Onemi said the earthquake was felt in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá and Antofagasta.

Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.
