Perthshire schools display artistic talent

Delighted pupils came to receive their prizes after the results of the annual Young Artist competition were announced in Perth recently.

Strathallan School student Reuben LaVallee has been named the ‘Junior Young Artist of the Year’ in this year’s Perthshire Art Association (PAA) Annual Exhibition.

Reuben’s winning entry ‘Different Slopes’ was a scratchboard piece depicting the things that he missed during lockdown and how he adapted to the very different times of the pandemic.

In the S1-S3 age group the runner-up was Johanna Kwizda, from Glenalmond College.

The senior winner was Kim Paul, a pupil at Glenalmond College with Perth High School’s Ciara Hull as runner-up.

In conjunction with the Perthshire Art Association, the Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull organises the annual Young Artist Competition for the Perth area secondary schools.

It was based at the Fergusson Gallery in Perth this year with vouchers for winners donated by Specialist Crafts.

The 2021 competition saw 103 pupil entries with seven out of eight local schools taking part.

Prizes were presented by Provost Dennis Melloy at the opening of the PAA Annual Exhibition on November 11.

Junior winner Reuben said: “I was delighted to receive the award for my piece and I’m proud to be part of the school’s entry to the competition.”

Reuben shares his success with Strathallan school’s art department which has retained the title of ‘Best Overall School’.

Head of art, Frank Glancy, said: “We are thrilled to have won two major titles in the Perthshire Art Association Annual Exhibition this year.

“To see Reuben win the junior category, amongst such a strong field of artwork, it is testament to his hard work and vision.

“We are also delighted to have retained the title of best overall school for another year. We feel honoured.”

The PAA Annual Exhibition runs until December 12 at the free to visit Fergusson Gallery at the end of Tay Street.
