Perthshire pupil's lockdown song brought lump to teacher's throat

A Bankfoot school pupil brought a lump to his teacher’s throat with a lockdown-inspired song.

Six-year-old Koby Lynch took a well-earned break from homeschooling to pen the song to the tune of ‘Flower of Scotland’ with his dad last week.

And ‘Oh Auchtergaven, when will we see our school again?’ has gone down a treat with both pupils and teachers alike.

Dad Gary Lynch - who used to be in Perth punk rock band Dirtbox - works as a mental health nurse at Murray Royal Hospital.

Gary told the Perthshire Advertiser : “They were having a Scottish week at the school for Burns Night and he wanted to do something Scottish. I had just come off a night shift and he asked if we could just have a music day.

“He’s been doing brilliant with homeschooling and trying his best.

“He came up with the idea of making up a song. He can’t play an instrument yet but he comes up with melodies.”

Koby said: “We used the guitar and I sing.”

Koby then chose some pictures to play along in a video with the music.

The primary two pupil then shared it with his Auchtergaven Primary class on the app - used by his and many Perth and Kinross schools - Seesaw.

And Koby was bowled over with all the positive feedback. He told the Perthshire Advertiser : “It made my teacher smile!”

And the images of Koby’s friends and classmates as the backdrop to the song has certainly pulled on some heartstrings.

Gary said: “I think missing his friends has been the biggest thing.”

Koby added that into his song singing: “I miss my teacher, I miss my buddy and friends. But we are resilient. Try to be happy. We’re staying homeward. We’ll meet again.”

Auchtergaven Primary was delighted Koby even managed to include one of the school’s values he has been learning over the past fortnight into his song - “we are resilient.”

Dad Gary said: “They drum it in early - Koby reminds me about them.”

Sharing the song on the school’s Twitter account, head teacher Catharine Findlay wrote: “Koby and his dad’s brilliant song, so worth a listen. There wasn’t a dry eye in the virtual staffroom.”
