Perthshire Pride: Lord of the Rings legend set to lead parade

Organisers of tomorrow's Perthshire Pride have revealed Sir Ian McKellen is set to appear at the event.

It had been hoped Sir Ian, who is appearing in theatre across Tayside this weekend, would head along for the first ever Pride parade in the city.

And on Friday evening, Perthshire Pride confirmed the award-winning actor had agreed to lead the parade.

The group posted on its social media pages: "We did it Perthshire!!!

"We are delighted to confirm that Sir  Ian McKellen  will be joining us tomorrow to lead our parade and say a few words of support!

"We couldn’t be more excited!"

Best known as Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings movies, Sir Ian is a passionate supporter of LGBT rights.

Perthshire Pride had started the campaign #BringGandalfBackToTheShire to persuade the 80-year-old to stop off in Perth between shows in Dundee and Pitlochry.

This is the second year Perthshire Pride has held an event in the city, but the first to feature a parade.

It will form part of 'Super Saturday' with several events taking place across the Fair City.

The news also comes after the PA incorporated the Pride colours into our masthead on Friday to support the Pride movement.
