Perthshire MP set to grill PM after receiving over 100 complaints about Cummings lockdown breach

A Perthshire politician is set to “grill” the prime minister on Dominic Cummings’ trip to Durham later this week.

Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart said he had been contacted by over 100 constituents about the issue.

Mr Cummings, a senior advisor to the prime minister, has faced calls to quit over the weekend after it emerged he drove 250 miles from London with his family to self-isolate despite his wife showing symptoms of COVID-19.

Further reports also suggested he took a second trip to the North East in April, having already returned to London, although this is denied by Mr Cummings and the government.

While many say this has been a clear breach of the lockdown, Mr Cummings has been supported by senior members of the government, including the prime minister.

Boris Johnson, speaking at the daily Downing Street coronavirus briefing, said Mr Cummings had “acted responsibly, legally and with integrity”.

But Mr Wishart told the Perthshire Advertiser that residents had been contacting him in their droves to raise the issue.

He said: “I have been contacted by over 100 constituents in the last 24 hours who are absolutely horrified about Dominic Cummings, a senior government adviser, travelling across the country whilst he had coronavirus symptoms.

“I am not sure that I have ever seen such outrage from my constituents over a single issue in such a short space of time.

“I will be continuing to make the views of my constituents very clear to the UK Government regarding this matter.

“I am due to grill the PM at a committee hearing later this week, and I will not hold back my views on this.

He added: “The sacrifices we have all made over the last nine weeks have been immense. It is completely unacceptable for the PM to continue to offer Mr Cummings his support and he most certainly does not have the support of the majority of my constituents.”
