Perthshire MP hits out after dead constituent is sent TV Licensing letter threatening £1000 fine

A Perthshire MP has received an apology from TV Licensing after they issued a threatening letter to a dead constituent.

SNP MP for Ochil and South Perthshire John Nicolson described the letter posted to the deceased as “crass and insensitive.”

The deceased’s daughter, who had already informed TV Licensing of her mum’s passing, contacted the MP because she found the letters initmidating and upsetting.

Mr Nicolson took to Twitter and told TV Licensing their letters caused distress “all the time” and claimed there was “widespread anger felt by MPs” about the conduct of TV Licensing.

He told the Perthshire Advertiser : “I’m delighted to have secured an apology and £30 compensation for my constituent from TV Licensing. But they’ve got to up their game. The letters they send are often threatening and intimidating and inappropriately directed at the elderly and vulnerable.”

A spokesperson for TV Licensing said: “We apologise for the distress this has caused, which happened as a result of human administrative error. We have reminded customer service staff of our procedures for when we are informed that a licence holder has passed away.”
