Perthshire look to bring festive cheer to the North Inch by finishing year on a high against Berwick

Perthshire plan to round off 2021 with plenty of points and performance positives.

The Eagles’ final National League 3 game of the year takes place at the North Inch tomorrow against Berwick (2pm).

A festive break then comes into play until January 8.

Shire are looking to reverse a defeat they picked up down in Berwick earlier in the season to bring some early Christmas cheer to supporters.

“It’s important to finish on a high because it’s a long time until our next game,” head coach Alan Clark said yesterday.

“A lot of water goes under the bridge in that time.

“Berwick have been pretty impressive in terms of their results and are certainly a top team in the league.

“But we went down there earlier in the season and gave a really good account of ourselves with a weakened team.

“We thought we could have come away with a result and we felt there was a bit of naivety about our play. We’ve sorted that now. With a strong team, I’m expecting us to be very competitive at the weekend.”

Shire’s game against Lasswade was called off last week and, on Tuesday, training was scrapped due to Storm Barra.

“We had to call training off on Tuesday night because of the storm,” Clark noted. “The pitches had taken a bit of a battering.

“It’s rugby in Scotland – everyone is used to it and you just need to deal with it. Your training might be disrupted.

“What that does mean is that we will be pretty fresh for the weekend. It gives the guys time to be ready.

“It doesn’t look like we have any particular injury worries, other than the long-term ones we know about.”

After this weekend’s game, Shire will continue to train before having a short rest over the Christmas period.

Following Berwick’s visit the next fixture in the schedule is January 8 at home to Greenock Wanderers.

Clark said: “We’ll take the heat off in terms of training and then we’ll get stuck in to the Tuesdays and Thursdays again in January.”
