Perthshire hotel's fear over houses plan

A hotel manager has questioned council bosses over plans to build houses near its function suite as she fears new neighbours might complain about music being played too loud.

Diane Valentine, general manager of Huntingtower Hotel, has written to PKC planners to ask what will happen if people who move into new properties near the premises start complaining about noise coming from functions and weddings.

She says her business relies heavily on the money made from holding these kinds of functions at weekends and fears new neighbours might ask PKC to take enforcement action against her if they do not like what they hear.

It is just the latest concern raised about the Pilkington Trust and the Stewart Milne Group’s plans to build hundreds of new homes by the River Almond after locals discussed many more at a packed meeting held at the hotel last Tuesday.

The pair filed an application to build 340 houses between the hotel and the river last month.

Ms Valentine told PKC in an email: “We are a large banqueting business and rely as a business on the income we get from functions and weddings held predominantly at the weekend most weekends.

“There is a noise level associated with these events, which is currently not an issue, [but] may become so if there are a number of houses backing on to where the function suite is.

“I would like to know if this has been considered. What impact do you foresee this having on this business and if a new neighbour does complain about the noise, what will be done?

“As you can appreciate, we cannot turn the music down when one of our wedding [guests] has paid a lot of money to enjoy their big day at the hotel.

“I notice on the plans there are areas of woodland but there is nothing between the hotel and the houses - this would be an option.”

Ms Valentines’s email has not been classed as an objection but officials will have to address her concerns when they determine the application.
