Perthshire Girlguiding groups bounce back from COVID separation and prepare to meet again

Girlguiding groups in Perth and Kinross are on the lookout for volunteers who can support local groups.

Groups in the region have had to adapt to new COVID-19 rules and many have continued meeting online.

As restrictions ease, groups are now meeting outside and are making plans to return to indoor meetings soon.

Determined to carry on guiding during this challenging time, guiding groups such as the 1st Auchterarder Brownies have continued to do guiding in new and innovative ways.

They moved their weekly meetings online, taking part in various workshops including baking sessions, yoga, clay-making, drama and science experiments.

They also posted activities to their private Facebook group and directly out to families so that girls could work towards earning their badges at home.

Susan Wishart, leader of the 1st Auchterarder Brownies and district commissioner for Auchterarder for Girlguiding Perth and Kinross, said: “I love taking part in guiding.

“It’s fun, challenging and something completely different from my work. It has boosted my confidence and made me realise what I am capable of.

“Whether online or in person, as a leader you get to take part in random activities with girls and have fun too, all things I would not be doing normally. How often as an adult do you get to play with slime or be silly dancing outside in the rain?”

The youngsters are also passionate about the Auchterarder group.

Maya (7), from 1st Auchterarder Brownies, said: “Brownies is really fun.

“We get to do science experiments which I love. We get to go on trips. We went to the Willowgate Centre and did lots of fun water sports, like paddle boarding. We get to earn badges.

“My favourite badges to complete were the Egyptians, Greek and Roman badges as I’m really interested in history. I’m working on my Zero Waste interest badge just now.”

Roslyn (8) from the 1st Auchterarder Brownies has a younger sister Adeline (6) in the 2nd Auchterarder Rainbows.

She said: “Brownies has been fantastic during lockdown.

“It has kept me and my sister Adeline entertained when we were stuck at home. It has been fun, crafty and exciting.

“My favourite things have been virtual sleepovers and camping in the garden with a fire to toast marshmallows. It was amazing!

“I enjoy earning badges and would like to get lots more for my camp blanket.”

Heather MacDonald, a 17-year-old young leader volunteering with 1st Auchterarder Brownies, added: “I have been volunteering with Brownies throughout lockdown and even though we had to move our meetings to Zoom, it didn’t stop the girls from having a lot of fun and learning new things.

“It was essential for the girls to see each other and interact with their friends
in such a tough and isolating time.”
