Perthshire family cheat death after car smashed by falling boulders

A Perthshire family cheated death when giant boulders rolled off a hillside and smashed into their car.

A couple and their three young children were travelling home through the Dalveen Pass after visiting relatives in Moniaive when the terrifying incident happened around 1.30pm on Sunday.

The 38-year-old mum from Errol said: “My husband was driving and out of nowhere, around five or six enormous boulders came rolling down the mountain and hit the car.

“One of them came in through the windscreen and into the passenger side and the rest struck the driver’s side, smashing the windows. The car is a total write-off.”

Police, an ambulance and first responders arrived at the scene and treated the woman for minor leg injuries and her husband for minor injuries to his hand.

The three children, all aged under seven, were unhurt.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “It was horrendous and we are all still in shock.

“Among the passers-by who stopped was a couple who stayed with us the whole time until the police and ambulance arrived.

“We were in so much shock we forgot to get their name but we’d like to say thanks to them.

“They even took us back to our family in Moniaive afterwards.

“We travel the road on a regular basis and we’ll continue to do so because you can’t live your life in fear, but this is something you would never expect to happen.

“We just feel very lucky to be alive.”
