Perthshire Conservative blasts Boris Johnson as prime minister rivals prepare for Perth

A Perth and Kinross Conservative councillor has launched an astonishing attack on prime ministerial hopeful, Boris Johnson.

Strathallan councillor Dr Crawford Reid, said it would be a “disaster for Scotland, the UK and EU,” if Johnson, who is leading Jeremy Hunt in the polls to replace Theresa May, ever became prime minister.

It comes as both candidates prepare to do battle in a hustings in Perth. The PA understands the concert hall in the Fair City is the likely venue for the Scottish hustings on July 5.

But Dr Reid is unlikely to be rolling out the welcome mat for Johnson.

He told the PA: “It beggars belief that Boris Johnson might be Prime Minister.

“He is absolute bluff and bluster. I think it would be a disaster for Scotland, the UK and the EU.

“Boris is not fit for high office.

“You only have to look at his CV. He’s been sacked on several occasions for telling lies.”

In 1988 Mr Johnson was fired as a journalist from The Times for fabricating stories. In 2004 when he was shadow arts minister, he was sacked by Conservative leader Michael Howard for lying about an affair with a columnist for The Spectator. Dr Reid added: “You cannot have a prime minister that thinks only of himself.”

In contrast, Dr Reid insisted Jeremy Hunt was the right man for the job.

The former health secretary was a controversial figure in the NHS down south but anaesthetist Dr Reid has defended Mr Hunt saying that “he cared deeply about the health service” and that “he was passionate about improving it.”

He added: “Jeremy Hunt has got gravitas and dignity.

“You can trust him. He’s quietly assured. He will fight for Scotland and the UK.

“I genuinely think he is more altruistic than Boris Johnson.”

Dr Reid said that he hopes Conservative members who have the vote make the right choice. He said: “They are not frivolous people and they are sensible people.

“I hope that they will look at facts and not empty promises.”

He finished by saying that the thought of Donald Trump and Boris Johnson together “does not bear thinking about.”

Meanwhile, Perth and Kinross’ only Tory MP, Luke Graham, said he is not declaring for a candidate at this time.

He previously backed Michael Gove for the top job.
