Perth Station arson attack leaves $500k damage bill as office engulfed in flames

An office at the station was engulfed in flames before the blaze was extinguished within an hour.

A man has been charged by police after a deliberately lit fire caused an estimated half a million dollars in damage to Perth Train Station.

Police allege CCTV footage captured the man walking through the cultural centre and setting fire to several rubbish bins at the train station around 3:00am on Wednesday morning.

He then allegedly broke into an office at the station on Wellington Street and set fire to paper products.

Detective Sergeant Dale Harmer said the office was engulfed in flames, resulting in a damage bill put at $500,000.

"He was arrested as he walked out of the main entrance," Detective Sergeant Harmer said.

The blazes were extinguished by firefighters within an hour.

Police said the 34-year-old man from Nickol had been charged with criminal damage by fire, burglary and criminal damage or destruction of property.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The main Wellington Street entrance to the station remains closed and it is still unknown when the gate will be reopened to public.

The Transperth InfoCentre at Perth Station also remains closed.

However, the Public Transport Authority said the fire and subsequent clean-up had not been a major disruption.

"Passengers wishing to access the station can do so via the Eastern Concourse, Horseshoe Bridge entrance or Perth Underground Station," Transperth said.

Staff have been deployed to direct commuters into the station through the different gates.
