Perth sepsis survivor hopes to raise money to fight condition with quiz night and silent auction

A Perth woman who has suffered from sepsis three times is getting ready to put residents to the test to help in the fight against the condition.

Kirsten Roper first contracted the life-threatening infection in 2016 after going through major surgery.

She went through it a second time in 2019 when she went into septic shock and was lucky to survive.

Her most recent bout was earlier this year when she spent nine days in hospital.

Kirsten and her dad Brian are now hosting a quiz night and silent auction to try and raise money for the UK Sepsis Trust, as well as raise awareness of the condition in general.

The night, which is being sponsored by the Dogger Saints St Johnstone podcast, is being held at Myths and Legends on St John Street on Saturday, October 9.

And she is hoping local businesses can step up and donate lots for the silent auction.

She told the Perthshire Advertiser : “This was something I was planning pre-COVID, but then lockdown came so this is the first opportunity we have had.

“It’s really good of Dogger Saints to help. I am a season ticket holder at St Johnstone and sit near one of them.

“We’ve got some prizes but even more would be nice. We’re trying to raise as much money as we can so anything local businesses can offer would be gratefully received.

“We’re looking for a good mixture of things. We’ve already got a photography session, beauty therapy vouchers and things like that.

“Along with goods/services/gift vouchers, we’d love to have some actual physical items for the silent auction that can be displayed on the night.”

A number of teams have already confirmed their attendance, but Kirsten would love even more to enter on the night, which kicks off at 7pm.

Anyone looking to offer donations or book quiz teams can contact kirsten on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/kirsten.roper1988, or text her dad Brian on 07786070758.

Speaking about her battle with sepsis to the PA earlier this year, Kirsten said: “It’s done a lot of damage, it’s really knackered my immune system.

“In 2019 I was critically ill and went into septic shock.

“I am pretty lucky to be sitting here speaking to you to be honest.

“It’s horrendous. It’s the most terrifying thing, particularly the second time.

“It had a massive impact on me mentally. It left me with a PTSD diagnosis.”
