Perth Prison to remain in lockdown as COVID cases continue to rise

Perth Prison will likely remain in lockdown until next week as COVID-19 cases continue to rise.

On Wednesday, 124 individuals were confirmed to have tested positive for coronavirus at the Edinburgh Road facility – a rise of seven from Monday and 119 since last Tuesday.

Eighteen prison staff members have also contract the virus.

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) confirmed that on Wednesday NHS staff sent to the site only had a handful of inmates left to test.

As a precautionary measure, all inmates are still currently self-isolating until the mass testing is completed.

This means prisoners do not have access to court or solicitor visits, family visits or use of the gym but do have access to open air and showers, as well as their mobile phones.

The SPS said there were no hospitalisations and no deaths as a result of the outbreak.

A Scottish Prison Service statement said: “We continue to manage the outbreak in HMP Perth.

"There are currently 124 confirmed cases of COVID amongst those in our care at HMP Perth.

"A significant number of these individuals are asymptomatic positives.

"As a precautionary measure, all individuals living in HMP Perth are currently isolating.

"This means that those in custody do not have access to courts or agents visits, family visits or the gymnasium at the moment.

"Individuals have access to open air and showers, as well as their mobile phones and the hall phones.

"We continue to work closely with Public Health colleagues in the relevant health boards in managing these cases."

An NHS Tayside spokesperson added: “NHS Tayside’s health protection team is investigating a number of cases of COVID-19 in residents and staff at HMP Perth.

“Close contacts have been identified and are being supported to self-isolate. Further testing continues to be offered to staff and residents where this is appropriate.”
