Perth police dispersed group of fans outside McDiarmid Park during Boxing Day match

A gathering of football fans were dispersed by Perth police officers outside McDiarmid Park on Boxing Day during St Johnstone’s league match against Celtic.

Pictures also show groups of locked out away supporters waving flags while stood on an embankment between two of the stadium’s stands just outside the ground.

It comes after first minister Nicola Sturgeon announced new rules and restrictions in a bid to stem Omicron cases, with football stadium attendances limited to 500 people.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers on patrol came across a small group gathered outside the football stadium on Crieff Road, Perth on Sunday, December 26.

“Officers engaged with them and they later dispersed.”

Nicola Sturgeon previously said the limit for outdoor events will apply for up to three weeks and one-metre physical distancing will also be required.

The Scottish Government has faced criticism over the decision with questions raised by supporters groups and clubs as to why all football clubs must restrict themselves to 500 supporters regardless of their size.

Many supporters and clubs have argued that more people should be allowed into larger stadiums, as there is more space to socially distance.

Some in the football community also argue that matches should be suspended until fans can fully return.

The deputy first minister, Perthshire North MSP and COVID recovery minister John Swinney, said the reason for restriction was to send a “very clear signal” and to give “clarity” to fans.

“I think the key point here is that we’ve got to take decisions based on making sure such judgements are effective,” he said.

“I make no apology for being so blunt, we need to quite simply reduce the degree to which people are interacting.

“A total of 500 as a maximum for outdoor events gives a very clear signal to people in the country that we have to reduce that interaction.”
