Perth named the most beautiful place in the UK at the Britain in Bloom awards

Judges at the Britain in Bloom competition have confirmed what we all knew already - Perth is the most beautiful place in the UK.

There was joy for the Beautiful Perth group in its 30th anniversary year on Friday night as the city picked up the top prize at the annual contest, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

The Fair City was named ‘champion of champions’ after scooping the ‘best large town’ gong in 2019 on what proved to be a night of double success for the region.

The Brig in Bloom group was also celebrating as it won the award for ‘best large village’.

Beautiful Perth, which is only the third Scottish winner of the top prize, was also recognised with a gold award and an open spaces award for Riverside Park. Brig in Bloom also received a gold award and a discretionary award for its work involving children and young people.

Volunteers from both groups travelled to London for the ceremony.

Beautiful Perth chair John Summers OBE said: “We hoped to win but knew we had extremely stiff competition. Coming out as the winner is a dream come true.

“This success celebrates the amazing achievements of our brilliant volunteers, sponsors and partners in action, all of whom helped us bring the title back to Perth.

“What the judges saw when they visited at the end of July was an outstanding level of commitment, hard work and community spirit.

“I’d like to thank the many people and organisations who support our work.

“Here’s to the next 30 years of community spirit.”

Perth was up against Castlecaulfield, Durham, Kingsbridge and St Helier.

Brig in Bloom vice chair Avril Fulton said: “As first time finalists in the competition we were absolutely thrilled to receive three awards on Friday evening.

“It was a very proud moment for our team.

“These are whole village awards and we appreciate all the support of our dedicated team of volunteers.

“The judges were not only impressed with our horticulture, but also our community involvement and environmental responsibilities.”
