Perth is set to be one of the hottest cities in the nation on Australia Day

Perth is set to be one of the hottest capital cities in the nation on Australia Day.

After a mild few days in Perth the heat will ramp up again over the long weekend, with the city set to be one of the hottest capitals on Australia Day.

Clear, blue skies are forecast for the weekend as east- to south-easterly winds push the maximum into the mid-30s.

A sunny 34 degrees Celsius is forecast for Saturday, 35C for Australia Day on Sunday, followed by 37C for the public holiday on Monday.

If you are travelling interstate, the forecasts vary for the other capitals, with some showers on the east coast:

  • Sydney: 22–30, medium chance of showers in the afternoon and evening
  • Melbourne: 16–27, partly cloudy
  • Brisbane: 25–31, slight chance of a shower
  • Canberra: 17–35, slight chance of a shower
  • Hobart: 17–23, partly cloudy
  • Darwin: 26–34, shower or two, possible storm

On the back of Perth's hottest ever December, which saw the city notch up a record-breaking four days above 40C, January has been a relatively mild month so far.

The city's current mean maximum is 30.3C, which is below the long-term January average of 31.2C.

But with warmer days on the horizon, Perth is set to edge closer to this mark in the week ahead.

Perth forecast

  • Friday: 12–31, sunny
  • Saturday: 18–34, sunny
  • Sunday: 20–35, sunny
  • Monday: 21–37, sunny
  • Tuesday: 23–35, sunny
  • Wednesday: 19–29, partly cloudy
  • Thursday: 16–25, partly cloudy
