Perth freeway reopened after man hit by concrete truck dies in hospital

A southbound section of the freeway in Atwell was closed as police investigated.

A man has died in hospital after being hit by a truck on Perth's Kwinana Freeway, with the accident causing severe traffic disruption as the road was closed for three hours.

Emergency services were called to the scene between Armadale Road and Gibbs Road in Atwell, in the city's southern suburbs, around 10.30am.

The man is believed to have been struck after getting out of his parked vehicle and walking into the oncoming path of the concrete truck.

The southbound section of the freeway between Armadale Road and Gibbs Road was closed while police investigated the incident.

Main Roads said the closure of the freeway caused heavy traffic congestion, and drivers were urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

The freeway was eventually reopened to traffic just before 2:00pm.

St John Ambulance said the man was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital with life-threatening injuries, but police later confirmed he died.

The man was described by a witness as being aged in his mid 60s.
