Perth drivers could be asked to leave cars at home for the day to turn focus on climate change

A call has been made for Perth drivers to leave their cars at home for the day.

Cllr Liz Barrett wants Perth and Kinross Council to implement a ‘No Car Day’ to coincide with the COP26 conference in Glasgow, which starts at the end of this month.

The Liberal Democrat member for Perth City South made the suggestion at a meeting of the full council last week.

And although concerns were raised about how such an action could work in rural areas, Cllr Barrett this week told the Perthshire Advertiser she still hoped to see a No Car Day in Perth.

She said the original suggestion came from the Soroptimist International of Perth group and that she “completely” supported it.

She added: “We need to tackle the climate emergency as a matter of urgency, and weaning ourselves from using cars in the city centre will encourage active travel and improve air quality, as well as reducing carbon.

“We raised this with the interim chief executive of the council, and have been advised that the Perth City Board are considering how this will work.”

Cllr Barrett made her suggestion during a debate on a climate change motion put forward at the full council meeting.
