Top quality racing and matching team spirit ensured the 2022 version of the Perth City Swim Club Championships was a highly successful weekend.
With virtually all of the club’s swimmers taking part, it meant a packed programme and an ideal opportunity for head coach Ann Dickson to monitor progress across all age groups.
Ann was delighted with the standard of racing and noted the positive attitude among the squads during the two-day event at Perth Leisure Pool.
Club president Gordon Currie echoed her views and paid tribute to the huge team of volunteers who helped make the gala a fully accredited meet.
He said: “Getting 172 individual volunteering sessions filled by our parents and other club members is a truly magnificent effort from everyone involved.
“It means we can run the event as a nationally recognised gala which gives all the kids times which they can use to enter future Scottish Swimming events.
“I can’t imagine there are many clubs our size who manage to do this, and it demonstrates the importance of parents getting engaged at an early stage with volunteering.
“We had 85 swimmers taking part over the weekend and around 20 of them were at their first club championships.
“I’m sure they will have really enjoyed the experience and that our more experienced swimmers will have helped to make them feel part of the team.
“Swimming is an individual sport, but we constantly emphasise the importance of supporting and encouraging team-mates.
“More than a dozen of our 2022 new starts were taking part in their first ever competition and they will have learned so much from the experience.
“Getting times on the board is really important for them when it comes to entering other competitions and marks the start of their journey in competitive swimming.
“There will have been some very tired youngsters on Sunday night, but I’m sure they’ll have got a real lift on Monday morning when they woke up and saw their first ever medals.”
The swimmers were also asked to vote for their 2023 club captains and chose senior swimmers Lucy McPartland and William Shepherd to represent them.
The popular duo will soon start planning the fun events for the final Friday night of training before Christmas and will be presented with their captain t-shirts at the club’s ceilidh and trophy presentation in the New Year.
