Perth cancer survivor’s efforts for charity

A Perth cancer survivor is getting ready to host a fundraising coffee morning this weekend.

Brenda Grant (58) is now in remission after being diagnosed with womb cancer, and wants to give something back to the Macmillan nurses who helped her during her treatment.

She said: “When I had womb cancer I had a lot of help from the nurses at Cornhill Macmillan Centre in Perth.

“Without a doubt the Macmillan nurses are in a league of their own, they seem to know exactly what to do and what to say while still keeping your dignity.

“Cancer hurts, even just to get your head around it, and that is where the nurses come in.

“They do everything, even things like sorting out your finances for you, everything a person could need.

“They are absolutely wonderful.

“With all the treatment I had I have a lot of ailments and I can’t work anymore on the back of that.

“I used to work at the Cancer Research shop on the High Street, and I would eventually like to go back there, because that is where my heart belongs.”

Brenda will be holding her coffee morning on Sunday, September 29 in Luncarty Memorial Hall from 10.30am until 2pm.

The former hairdresser is looking for donations of cake, and hopes to raise as much money as she can for Macmillan Cancer Support in the process.

This comes straight off the back of her and a friend organising another charity event earlier this month.

Brenda continued: “A friend of mine Heather Smith and I organised a 70s disco afternoon for MND Scotland on September 7 and we managed to raise £460.

“There is a man in the village that has MND [motor neurone disease] and he is a very nice man with a nice family, and it is such a shame.

“MND is not well recognised as a charity, and I would like to think once I have done the coffee morning this weekend I could do more fundraising for them, because there are no specific facilities in Perth.

“I would perhaps like to go and do another 70s disco in the hall and make it an open event to raise some more money for those with MND.”

She said all are welcome to her coffee morning on Sunday at Luncarty Memorial Hall.
