A Perth charity that provides baby clothes and accessories for families in need has been gathering contestants for a virtual balloon race that will set off from Santa Claus’ Lapland HQ on Christmas Day.
Using advanced digital mapping technology, dedicated volunteers at Buttons & Bows Baby Bank charity have set up the festive fundraising effort.
Members of the public are being invited to sign up and join in for a donation of £3 per balloon.
Founded during lockdown, the Market Street-based charity was opened by Perth and Kinross Provost Xander McDade earlier this year.
With a mission to alleviate poverty for parents of babies and toddlers under five years old, the charity has distributed clothing, cots, prams, toys, bedding, bottles and other necessities to hundreds of local families free of charge.
Charity founder Caroline Moore, of Tulloch, said: “We have had a fantastic response from the kind-hearted people of Perthshire.
“Their donations of clothing and other essential items have helped many struggling young families get through this bitterly cruel cost of living crisis.
“To carry on our work, we also need some funding to help us pay the bills for necessary running costs, including rental and heating for our premises.
“By participating in this balloon race you can join with us in spreading some Christmas magic while helping those in desperate need get through the freezing days of January and February.”
Another volunteer, grandmother of seven (and great grandmother of one) Evelyn Bell, added: “Buying a balloon takes just a few minutes – and you can rest assured there will be no latex rubber pollution causing harm to wildlife and the natural environment.
“This digital race sets off from Lapland at noon on Christmas Day. You can choose the size, weight, shape and inflation pressure and decorate it with artwork and messages, then follow its online journey guided by real-time data from the Meteorological Society.”
One person who was helped by Buttons & Bows ended a long heartfelt letter with the following words: “Thank you is not enough.
“I don’t know how to repay for the kindness, love and support given to my little munchkin and me. Please know that this project is making a difference, and that the care and support that stands behind it is cherished and appreciated every day.
“The Baby Bank is helping families like mine and we will be forever grateful as thanks to you all we are still here.”
Caroline Moore thanked the individuals and agencies who have backed the project.
She said: “Without their generous support many young families in Perthshire would now be facing a bleak Christmas and a dismal New Year, so I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed from the bottom of my heart.”
