Perth and Kinross unlikely to move to level zero restrictions on June 28 after cases spike

Perth and Kinross is "more likely" to remain in level one restrictions from June 28 after a recent spike in COVID cases.

During her briefing at Holyrood today (June 15), Nicola Sturgeon said that “in all probability” she will next week announce a pause in the easing of restrictions in a bid to vaccinate as many people as possible.

The Scottish Government had indicated it hoped to move all areas to the lowest level of restrictions - level zero - from June 28.

But a rise in case rates and hospital numbers, driven by the spread of the Delta variant of coronavirus that originated in India, has forced the decision to delayed.

And COVID-19 rates in Perth and Kinross have more than doubled in just a week.

The seven day infection rate is now at its highest since January.

And parts of Perth have infection rates of over 500 per 100,000 people.

According to data from Public Health Scotland, there were 237 positive tests in the region in the week leading up to June 11, compared with 114 the week before.

That makes an infection rate of 156 per 100,000 - the highest level since January 18 and up from 76.3 for the week up to June 4.

Test positivity has also increased in the past week from 2.6 per cent to 4.7 per cent.

And neighbouring Dundee has the worst COVID rate in Scotland with 294.7 people per 100,000 having the virus.

In Perth, the Letham neighbourhood has an infection rate of over 590 per 100,000 after 34 positive tests in a week.

Hillyland, Tulloch and Inveralmond has a rate of 524 and Central and South Inch has a rate of 445.7 per 100,000.

Other areas recording infection rates above 200 per 100,000 are: Coupar Angus and Meigle; Guildtown, Balbeggie and St Madoes; Invergowrie, Longforgan and Abernyte; Muirton; North Inch; Scone.

The increase has prompted NHS Tayside to set up drop-in vaccination clinics this week.
