Perth and Kinross pipers set to pay tribute to NHS staff and key workers at 8pm tonight

Pipers in Perth and Kinross are set to take part in a unique Clap for Carers activity to support the NHS.

The country will once again join together at 8pm to cheer the UK's brave NHS workers, as well as other key workers taking on vital roles throughout the coronavirus crisis.

There will also be a ‘Pipe Up for Key Workers’, with pipers from across Scotland paying their own tribute.

The plan to get hundreds of the nation’s pipers playing ‘Scotland The Brave’ was started by the National Piping Centre in Glasgow but the idea caught the imagination of Perthshire pipers.

Among those taking part will be the Duthie family from Luncarty.

Chris lifts mood during lockdown

Dad Alastair Duthie is pipe major with the Perth and District Pipe Band and his wife Alison is the band’s secretary.

Daughter Katie has been making her mark as a serious piper recently - last summer she successfully auditioned for The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland and in January, at the Solo Piping Schools Competition in Pitlochry, she was placed first in the Piobaireachd under 15 class and crowned champion piper in the under 15 section.

The Pipe Up for Key Workers campaign struck a chord with  Vale of Atholl Pipe Band members too, who blasted Scotland the Brave from homes all over the Pitlochry area.

The Pitlochry Highland Night stalwart, piper Bruce Hinch also took out his pipes in support of key workers, giving an emotive solo rendition of the popular tune from his back garden.
