Perth and Kinross parents to go online for early years places

A new application process for enrolling children into early learning and childcare will be introduced this year.

Access to significantly increased free childcare for families in Perth and Kinross will come fully into effect from August as part of the national expansion of provision access.

Funded by Perth and Kinross Council, the number of funded hours of childcare will rise from 600 to 1140 for all three to five year olds and eligible two year olds.

A range of options will be given to parents and carers to allow them to go into work, training or study, including private and third sector nurseries and childminders.

Drop-in sessions have been held in communities across the region in recent months, with the last one taking place at Glenearn Community Campus in Perth on Saturday, December 14.

During the events, parents and carers have been able to find out what options are available in their area, meet staff from the council and other funded providers, and ask any questions they may have.

As part of the expansion roll-out, the council is introducing a new application process from January 20.

Parents will be able to apply online and applications will be managed centrally, making the process easier and more efficient.

Councillor Caroline Shiers, convener of lifelong learning at Perth and Kinross Council, said: “Perth and Kinross continues to be a popular place for families with young children looking for a great quality of life.

“With the expansion of the funded early learning and childcare hours available from August 2020, this increases the opportunity for children to benefit from high quality provision and for parents to be able to return to work, education or training.

“The jump from 600 to 1140 hours of funded early learning and childcare provision is a significant one, and we are working closely with our partners in the private and third sector to ensure there are suitable options available for families around Perth and Kinross.

“The increase in funded childcare will also include a healthy, freshly prepared meal and snack for each child, which benefits their wellbeing and their capacity to learn.

And she added: “We recognise this is a big change for everyone involved and the new application process being brought in from January is intended to deliver a more streamlined approach that will assist both families and staff in our schools and early childhood centres.”
