Perth and Kinross Council warns secondary pupils to make sure they bring face coverings to school

Perth and Kinross Council has said it is revising its guidance after it was revealed secondary school pupils and staff will need to wear face coverings in communal areas.

Deputy first minister and Perthshire North MSP John Swinney made the announcement today (August 25) after a number of positive cases in schools across the country, including in Perthshire.

The new guidance comes into force on Monday, August 31 and will apply to staff and pupils when they are moving around communal areas in schools, including confined spaces where physical distancing is difficult.

Additionally, the use of face coverings will also apply where adults, children and young people aged five and over are travelling on dedicated school transport.

Staff and pupils should ensure they:

• bring their own face coverings to school;

• store these safely in a washable, sealable bag or container when not in use;

• wash reusable face coverings in hot water at the end of each day; and

• safely and hygienically dispose of disposable face coverings after use.

A council spokesperson said: “It is understood that there will be some staff and young people who cannot wear a face covering for good reasons and that position will be respected.

“It is worth remembering also that a face covering can be as simple as a scarf, snood or other piece of cloth to cover the nose and mouth.”

Councils will make arrangements for face coverings to be available for pupils and staff where required.
