Perth and Kinross council leader pushes for 'Dundee plus' restrictions model to prevent whole region going into tier three

The leader of Perth and Kinross Council has called on the Scottish Government to consider putting parts of the region close to Dundee into tier three of coronavirus restrictions so the majority can go in to tier two.

Cllr Murray Lyle said he is concerned about the prospect of Tayside-wide tier three restrictions being brought in after a rise in cases in Dundee.

But the Conservative member says the infection rate in large parts of Perth and Kinross are low, and they should not be hit with harsher restrictions.

It is understood NHS bosses are keen to lump Perth and Kinross and Angus into tier three with Dundee, despite a more council-centric approach being taken elsewhere.

Cllr Lyle has proposed what he calls a "Dundee plus" model, which would see the likes of Invergowrie in the same tier as Dundee.

He told the Perthshire Advertiser : "Dundee is almost certainly going to be in tier three, but whether the rest of us are going to be in tier three, I don't know.

"I have been challenging them to adopt a 'Dundee plus' model.

"You have places in Perth and Kinross that have no relevance to Dundee. Edinburgh is closer to Dundee than a lot of places in our region.

"If you look at Perth and Kinross in general, the incident rate is pretty low, but there is a high spike in the corner at Invergowrie."

But Cllr Lyle admitted his proposal could be vetoed because the NHS wants "simple messaging".

He added: "Tier three would be a disaster for businesses in Perth and Kinross."
